In the midst of the modern Arab village of "Jish" archeological ruins of the ancient Jewish settlement "Gush Halav" can be found. The settlement is well known for its active participation in the Jewish revolt against the Romans. In fact, Yochanan of Gush Halav, a citizen of the settlement, led his people into revolt, thereby revealing the extent of the settlement's commitment to the rebellion. Alas, no relics survive this early Roman period.

The Synagogue

Ancient burial sites, from the later Roman and Byzantine periods have survived and are located within the Arab village. In a nearby field lie the ruins of an ancient synagogue. Only its foundations, segments of wall cut out of hewn stone, sections of pillars and a lintel, which is adorned with Aramaic prescriptions and an eagle shaped relief, have survived the test of time.
